B'eau Kouter

Opposite the Kouter in Ghent lie the three buildings of B’eau Kouter, featuring historic properties from the 18th and 19th centuries alongside a harmoniously integrated new volume. The project comprises 35 apartments and various office and retail spaces. The renovated townhouses, listed on the architectural heritage inventory, retain their historic charm, while the new volume respects the rhythm and characteristics of its neighbors. The interiors, featuring moldings, natural stone stairs, and marble fireplaces, have also been given a new sense of purpose. This creates a harmonious blend of historical heritage and contemporary comfort for living and working on the Kouter.

B’eau Kouter: Historic Charm, Contemporary Solutions

B’eau Kouter, an iconic heritage complex on the Kouter in Ghent, comprises 18th- and 19th-century townhouses, complemented by a new extension that blends harmoniously with the historic surroundings. The project combines 35 apartments with office and retail spaces, whilst fully preserving the historic character.

Where History and Modern Technology Meet

The historic buildings, listed on the inventory of immovable heritage, were thoroughly renovated. The challenge lay in integrating modern systems such as home automation, HVAC and smart building technology, without compromising the authentic architecture and interior elements such as mouldings, natural stone staircases and marble fireplaces.

Vermeulen was commissioned to carry out the complete technical installation, including:

  • Advanced lighting techniques, subtly tailored to the historic character
  • Smart energy management and HVAC solutions for optimum comfort
  • Home automation integration and intelligent smart building systems
  • Security and access control systems, discreetly built-in

Smart Technology in a Heritage Context

The project focuses on energy efficiency, sustainability and user-friendliness. By combining modern technologies and smart automation with historical craftsmanship, B’eau Kouter has been transformed into a future-proof residential and commercial complex where heritage and modern functionality blend seamlessly.
